Victorious Athlete in Augmented Reality
A groundbreaking location-based AR application that brings ancient history to life at the Getty Villa. This immersive experience reveals the long-lost history of one of the museum's most-prized statues through cutting-edge augmented reality technology.

Project Overview
Working with the Getty Villa, I developed an AR application that transforms how visitors experience ancient artifacts. The app uses location-based technology to overlay digital content onto the physical statue, revealing its hidden history and cultural significance.
The experience combines:
- 3D Texturing – High-fidelity digital reconstruction of the statue with historically accurate materials and weathering.
- Look Development – Advanced shader work to achieve photorealistic rendering in real-time AR environments.
- Location-based AR – Precise spatial tracking and anchoring for seamless integration with the physical museum space.
Technical Implementation
The project required sophisticated 3D modeling and texturing techniques to recreate the statue's original appearance. Using photogrammetry and historical research, I developed a digital twin that shows how the statue would have looked in its original context.
Key technical challenges included:
- Spatial Tracking – Ensuring stable AR anchoring in the museum environment with varying lighting conditions.
- Performance Optimization – Balancing visual fidelity with real-time rendering requirements on mobile devices.
- Historical Accuracy – Collaborating with museum curators to ensure authentic representation of ancient materials and techniques.
Impact & Results
The AR experience has transformed visitor engagement at the Getty Villa, providing an educational tool that makes ancient history accessible and engaging. The project demonstrates the potential of AR technology to enhance cultural heritage experiences and museum education.
